Is Alternative Energy a Viable Option to Cheap, Dense Oil Energy?

The situation is getting worse, as oil price shows no signs of coming down. What would happen if Peak Oil theories hold any truth? Is there an alternative on which teh world economy can fall back on? r are we destined to live in villages and growing our own crops once the oil is no longer within reach.

Would it mark the end of Modern civilization, as we know it?

Nope. We’ll still keep our modern civilization, we’ll just have to make some minor changes in how we power and feed that civilization. (And what’s so wrong about growing your own food if you want to? Saves money and gas.) Never underestimate the human ability to adapt and to invent. The thing is, we will have to learn adapt to our environment, not the other way around. The reason it hasn’t happen yet is that no one is making us. As long as the oil industry has this country by the cajones, we’ll be willing slaves to oil because it’s the easiest way. Until people get sick of it and do something else.

I think electricity will replace oil soon. There are so many options to generate electricity but we have to diversify. Solar (PV panels and hot water), wind and geothermal combined with green building and energy-efficient appliances can be the new norm. For transportation, I think we’ll move toward more plug-in hybrids progressing to fully electric. Tricky part is the supply and demand thing: getting more people to invest in these things to bring the prices down so that more people can afford it! I look forward to the day when my house and car are energy-independent powered simply by what’s free and available in my environment.
