By switching your old gas or oil furnace out for a 95% high efficiency warm air natural gas furnace.  Some states are even offering tax credit/refunds; so be sure to check with your local state official or tax accountant to see if your state is one of those offering such.

But why choose natural gas over oil?  The main reason that natural gas is the best choice is that it is our own country’s natural resource.  It also burns much cleaner than oil, making it the wisest choice for the environment.  Another good reason to choose natural gas over oil is that there is less maintenance involved for the home owner.

The first step for your heating project would be to find a reputable heating contractor.  Ask your friends and neighbors who they may have used or check with your local chamber of commerce.  It’s always wise to obtain at least two estimates, making sure that the contractor does a heat loss (and gain if also adding A/C).  To do this, the contractor will need to measure your home and windows.  He will ask you about the insulation in the walls and attic; how much and what type.  You’ll also need to be able to inform him if your windows are single, double or triple pane.  And he may also want to know if they have Low E and Argon Gas.

Unfortunately, many older furnaces were installed when fuel oil was cheap and the rule of thumb was “bigger is better.”  With today’s higher energy cost, this is no longer the norm. In my area – North East Pennsylvania – contractors size a furnace based upon the fact that if it’s 0 F outside it will maintain a temperature of 70 F inside.  But there’s never a furnace made with exactly that BTU (British thermal unit) rating so it would be the next BTU size larger.  Your contractor will be able to choose the correct BTU rating for your home based on the heat loss study.  Say for instance if on a -10 F day and the wind is blowing and you are still comfortable, then the furnace should run almost constantly.  This scenario is called Optimum Efficiency because you are using all the heat that the furnace can produce, i.e.: no wasted energy.

Higher end furnaces (high efficiency) also come in two stage and variable BTU’s.  These will come on with a lower BTU rating with a slower blower speed.  This is great for spring and fall.  Used with a compatible thermostat in colder weather, the furnace will reach maximum BTU’s when room temperature does not start to rise.  With use of a standard thermostat the BTU’s will raise to maximum after a pre-set time.

High efficiency warm air gas furnaces have been produced for over 20 years.  The early models were often troublesome.  But over time, manufacturers have solved these early problems.  Today’s better brands of modern gas furnaces are virtually trouble free.  Some of which I have personally installed 15 years ago are still running efficiently and trouble free.

I firmly believe that with general home owner maintenance and proper installation along with periodic cleaning and inspection by a heating professional every 4-5 years, until the unit is 10 years old (than more often), the homeowner will save hundreds of dollars in energy costs.

Part of a proper inspection will include checking for proper air flow.  A furnace that does not have enough air flow, i.e.: proper ducts and clean filters will prematurely fail and can result in carbon monoxide poisoning or a fire, both of which can be fatal.  Of course, any thing that burns whether it’s wood, coal, oil, natural gas and propane gas, if not burning properly, will give off deadly carbon monoxide.  Every home should have a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector on every level and replace your batteries every 6 months.  Most carbon monoxide detectors are only good for five years from the date of manufacture.  So when you purchase one, make sure to check this date which is usually of the back of the package.

So for whatever reason you choose to make the switch to a high efficiency warm air natural gas furnace, make sure you choose a professional heating contractor to do the installation for you.  Along with installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
