The search for viable alternatives to fossil fuels seems to be endless. From the news to the Internet, everywhere we go the environment is one of the main topics. Finding a better way to fuel our vehicles is essential for the earth’s future as well as our own as its inhabitants. Compressed natural gas or CNG is yet another fossil fuel alternative. Compressed natural gas is made from the compression of natural gas that is primarily made up of methane. It is condensed down to less than 1% of the regular volume it is usually at. Then it is stored in special sphere shaped containers. 

For quite some time now, compressed natural gas has been used in many vehicles in places like South America and Europe. This was mainly due to a substantial rise in gasoline prices. But now that it is clear we need a change for the good of the planet, maybe this is something the rest of the world wants to consider as well. CNG can be used in regular gasoline engines but they must be converted first in order to work properly. When you refuel compressed natural gas, it must be done at a fueling station designed for this purpose.

More storage space is required to run compressed natural gas than with a regular gasoline vehicle. It is compressed into a liquid form which requires additional tank space. Quite often the tanks that store compressed natural gas are large and take up a lot of space. They need to be carried in the back of a truck or in the trunk of a car in order to fit adequately. This is something that could be considered a serious disadvantage by those who enjoy having the cargo space in their vehicle. It is also possible to install the tank beneath the vehicle but that would require quite a bit of extensive additional work. 

To obtain the natural gas needed to make CNG, three different types of wells are required. This can become expensive when factoring in all of the costs involved with acquiring natural gas. All of the gas obtained via the well must undergo a certain type of cleaning process before it can be used in homes and vehicles. This is where another potential expense comes in. Transportation and storage costs will also be a factor, which consumers will have to consider. Demand will play a role in how much compressed natural gas can be used. Preparation would have to be made in advance for it to be used in mass quantities. 

One great thing about CNG is that when it is properly stored in the right tanks it can last for twenty years or more. Though it does still give off some emissions when it is burned, it is much cleaner to combust than other fossil fuels like petroleum and diesel. The emissions are up to 80% less harmful with CNG. Though many fossil fuel alternatives have proven to be great possibilities, compressed natural gas should certainly not be ruled out.
