Can driving in REALLY low RPMs damage your car?
I know this is an odd question. I have a 2005 Subaru Impreza with a 5 spd std. Lately Ive been driving it around in extremely low RPMs and getting phenominal gas mileage. With my old driving habits I accelerated quickly giving me 20-22 mpg city. Lately I’ve been shifting around 2000 RPMs and and cruising at about 1000-1200 rpms. This is causing me to get 30+ mpg city! This new driving involves me just tapping the gas, you’d be surprised but the car still gets up to speed rather quickly, but when I upshift the car drops close to 1000 RPMs and sometimes the engine ‘rumbles’. It doesn’t feel like the car is going to stall, it just makes a low burbling noise. I also can’t quite tell if the rumbling is an engine or exhaust noise…or both. Does this sound mean I’m damaging the car or is it just a natural sound that happens when you drive in low RPMs?
FYI I’m not driving like a grandpa, still at or above the speed limit depending on the area…I just dont gun it to get up to speed
As long as the engine isn’t detonating (rattling like a can of marbles), you should be okay. But periodically, you do need to redline it, to blow the accumulated carbon out of the heads and exhaust. That will actually improve your mileage, if done only once in a while. (Every other tank of gas.)
While you’re at it, crank up your tire pressure to the max allowable (check on the sidewall), and make sure your air cleaner is fresh. Those two practices will add some fuel mileage.
