synthesizing ammonia from natural gas?

How cost effective and practical can a nitrogen product(fertilizer) be made from methane gas, produced from a small scale biogas manure digester?

Not very. Ammonia plants, due to the low cost of it and high cost in manufacture due to the cathalysts required, only become proffitable on large scales. They are 100 million dollar investments. But the process required is to split the methane into carbon and hydrogen and “burning” the hydrogen with nitrogen gas manufactured from fractionalized destillation of air. It takes huge amounts of energy to run all the compressors so ammonia production is basically energy refinement. Just having small amounts of methane won´t do.

Why not use the manure to manufacture nitrogen products from it? All you need to do is to switch the digester from an anaerob biogasdigester, which doesn´t utilize all the enrgy in the decomposition anyway, to an aerobe digester. With enough oxygen in the digester all the organic materials will become fully oxidized to give CO2, water, and all the sulfates, phosphates and nitrates you can handle. Aerobe biodegradation is also much faster than anaerobe degradation. And you´ll get huge amounts of heat to boot. But you need to keep a balance inbetween the nitrogen and carbon ratio in the manure. Too much nitrogen and the bacteria will get rid of it as ammonia or nitrogen gas.
