if the prices of natural gas and crude oil are directly correlated what problems does this present our society

Assuming a positive correlation between the two, their prices would move in the same direction, if not by the same proportion. This would discourage long term substitution of one for the other and will create a two separate segments of the energy markets that move similarly.
