Buying a home with propane heat vs. natural gas or oil?
We’re looking for a house more in the country (Buffalo NY area) and are finding many that heat with propane or oil.
Having always lived in the suburbs we’re relatively used to being screwed by National Fuel–we don’t like it we’re just used to it.
How does the cost of these 3 options compare? My husband is all about geothermal, but those are very hard to find. We may eventually convert to that, but in the meantime do you have an opinion?
Thanks for your time!
It varies by region, but generally speaking for every dollar you spend heating a home with electricity you are going to spend $0.80 to heat with oil, about $0.65 or $0.70 to heat with propane and about $0.45 or $0.50 to heat with natural gas.
I sell propane and heating oil in southern Ontario, Canada. The numbers vary year to year and occasionally propane costs a little more than oil, but these numbers represent the overall trend in my market for the last 10+ years…I would think Buffalo, which is just south of here wouldn’t be very much different.
