Can I use PVC for my outdoor natural gas lines?

I am trying to install another heater and am wondering if it is safe to use PVC instead of the galvanized. The gas company requires galvanized for inspection purposes, but this line does not need to be inspected. The main line comming in (from the gas company who won’t inspect PVC) is PVC. Why can they run PVC but I can’t?
I know for a fact the burried line from the gas company is PVC, when we hit the line while digging our septic, the gas company told us to patch it with PVC and PVC cement and they they came by and checked for leaks before they told us to re-bury it.

Although PVC will ‘work’ from a pressure aspect
(and possibly from a material),

PVC is prolly not the best choice for potential safety and liability reasons.

FWIW -
Some gas utility companies will interrupt service if they discover non-approved/’hazardous’ materials/installations on the customer side of the meter…

There are several standards/practices applicable to NG piping systems.
Some are available on line/in public libraries. Others cost $$$.
ie:
“AGA Plastic Pipe Manual for Gas Service”
“Handbook of Thermoplastic Piping System Design” by Thomas Sixsmith, Reinhard Hanselka

The bulk of ‘plastic’ gas transmission lines are medium/high density polyethylene (PE) pipe.
PE pipe isn’t that expensive compared to black steel… least down here… and may prove to be your best bet.

Physical installation of PE piping systems appears to more critical than black steel systems.
