I can’t find my A/C air filter, help?
I can’t figure out where the filter is on my A/C and heating unit in my house to change it. It is a gas heater unit with central air conditioning.
There is a panel on the top I took off but no filter is behind it. It looks like that panel is just for insulation for the metal/tin pipes behind it.
There is another panel in the middle of the unit which has vent slots on it, but I didn’t see any filter there either. This is the panel that the natural gas guy took off to check the flame for the heater and you can see that flame through the vents.
There is one final panel on the bottom of the unit, but again I didn’t see any filters behind there.
I’m guessing the unit has been there since the house was built in about ‘88.
I even tried unscrewing and taking the panel off the wall below the AC closet, but there was nothing behind there except a whole lot of dust.
What exactly am I looking for? I was under the impression that filters were easy to get to and find.
Perhaps the furnace has no filter in it. It wasn’t replaced the last time it was checked. Get the name of the unit, the model and model number, serial number and you can probably go on the web and find the schematic for the unit and find out where the filters are. Or take this information to a plumbing and heating contractor. They have books and more books on all the models they have had the occasion to work on. Last resort, call out the repairman and have him service the unit. You should do this once a year anyway
