Anyone pursuing a career related to the Environment (or perserving it)?

just wondering if there are more of us out there!
i’m currently an environmental studies student. not too sure where i plan on going with my degree, but i’d love to work on energy-efficient technology (solar power, etc.). are there any other environmental students out there, or ones who have a career in it? what do you do specifically?

I work as an environmental consultant. My undergraduate degree is in biochemistry. The majority of my work is focused on cleaning up contaminated groundwater from industrial, commercial, and private properties. My work protects both city municipal well fields and private supply wells from contamination such as carcinogens.

One thing that I would highly recommend is to take a broad swath of classes. You would be amazed how many projects you can get work on if you have a basic understanding that builds into experience. This ultimately will make yourself much more valuable as an employee and successful in a competitive market.

I like the idea of working on energy efficient technologies as one leg of your background. But remember that the simple example of solar power involves many different professions and trade skills. The best thing is to know a little about everything and focus on something you like.

My main focus is on bioremediation. This is a process where I feed bacteria in groundwater certain things to get them to eat my contaminants for me. It saves thousands to millions of dollars for those paying the bills, including tax payers. I find it very rewarding. I also write lots of reports, provide technical input, help geologists, review engineering plans, give presentations, and get to work out in the sun from time to time.
