In any future, will Americans have careers in any production enterprise?
Can the consumption culture that we have created ever compete for production (manufacturing) with the non-consumption nations (eg China)? The time scale beyond start-ups/innovator enterprises (5-15 yrs).
Here’s what happens to a Massachusetts producer of solar power equipment: The start-up generates patents and government subsidies and starts to grow. Once company operations exceed precise commitments and agreements, management starts to send unprofitable production to China by creating subsidiaries. After a time, depending on Chinese law, subsidiary buys parent company
Long term is hard to predict. For the medium term, however, I believe Americans will have careers in non-traditional production enterprises, based on at least two factors:
1. Americans lead the consumption culture, dictating the tastes and more importantly, the creation of productive ventures. Thus the subsidiary will be buying parent companies producing older and likely replaceable products.
2. As “non-comsumption” nations’ living standards improve, their consumption will increase and their wish for a greater standard of living, forcing higher wages, becoming higher cost production locations.
