How much do different types of powerplants cost to build?

How much do different types of powerplants cost to build? I read an article about solar power today and it compared several different solar technologies in dollars per watt per construction, but didn’t compare that to other power generation technologies. How much in dollars per watt do other types of powerplants cost to build?

Inflation in the cost of materials such as cement, steel, and other metals has been running at high levels, and interest rates are a key factor, so it’s not an easy question. Overall construction costs have about doubled since 2000, according to the IHS/CERA Index.

Since no new nuclear plant has been built in the U.S. for decades, all we can do is estimate. Moody’s Investors Service conservative estimate of between $5000 and $6000/kWe for nuclear plants. (link 2) (kWe = kilowatt electric, a measure of generating capacity)

Last year, Duke Energy estimated the cost of one 800MW coal plant at 1.83 Billion (link 3). That’s about $2300/kWe.

But comparing wind or solar energy generation with coal and nuclear is difficult. Coal and nuclear plant output can be controlled by the operators, whereas wind and solar energy generation is constrained by natural events. Solar is limited to daylight hours, and weather interferes; wind energy requires a minimum wind of about 7 mph, and windmills shut down in winds over about 30mph. For a given location, historical records can be used to estimate the average number of hours that wind or solar energy can be generated.
