Employment in Wales for a Canadian?

I have been trying to move to Europe for years and one country that looks promising is Wales. I know that an employer has to show that they can’t find an EU member to do the work so they hire in areas where there is a shortage of workers.

What areas should I be looking at for my skill set?

I have over 10 years in construction including stonework, woodwork, landscaping, as well as more modern technology like solar and wind power.

I am a trained arborist with 4 years in the field.

I have 12+ years driving a verity of heavy machinery including front end loaders, backhoes, forklifts as well as trucks and moving vans all in very cramped areas.

6+ years in childcare and teaching gymnastics with certification.

I don’t need to be rich I just need enough to live off on. An employer that has a hard time keeping workers would be just fine. I am also looking into the possibility of being an au pair so I can learn to speak welsh better and make some connections.

I’m not actually sure … generally it tends to be those in IT, finance and medicine that are successful with sponsorship, but then I’m in London so maybe it’s just that arborists don’t come here. Also, I’m not sure why you think Wales looks promising, as my understanding is that many parts of Wales have very high unemployment.

I would first of all look up the Highly Skilled Migrant Program and see if you qualify. They award points based on your education and so on, and you should be able to get an idea of whether you’d qualify without actually submitting an application.

Otherwise, I’m thinking that being an au pair might be your only way in, but as far as I know you can only get a one-year visa for that.
