Can someone give me any serious advice about what to grow or produce on two and a half acres of land?
I want to sell something in order to earn a living (approximately $50,000 per year). The soil is wet clay (bracken fern grows well), & has a small dam, a double garage, rainwater tank and power. The land is in a cool, temperate climate (hot, dry summers and cold (minus 5 degrees Celsius), wet winters) near the coast, with gale-force winds. I live 20 minutes away and there is no house on the property.
$50,000 for 2.5 acres of “whatever” seems pretty challenging.
Because of the climate and wind conditions, high priced plants like rare orchids are probably out of the question. The wet clay soil could also pose some problems.
If the area is completely unprotected from gale-force winds, planting an orchard is probably not going to work either.
You could plant low-lying, vining type vegetables, like watermelon, pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, etc… They would work in the clay soil and the wind wouldn’t affect them. It might be hard to get $50,000/year from 2.5 acres of vegetables.
Let’s see, if you put in the time, you could get about 6 pounds of zucchini per plant. Sell them at $.35/pound (wholesale price). If you got lucky, you might get $2 worth of zucchini per plant. If you went with a bush variety, each plant would need about 4 square feet. There’s about 43,000 square feet per acre. So you could plant about 10,000 zucchini plants per acre. So 25,000 zucchini plants fit in 2.5 acres with a little room to spare. At $2 per plant, you’ve made $50,000. Of course with seed costs, renting or buying a tractor, fertilizer, irrigation system, hiring a harvest crew, transporting the zucchini to market, etc… you might be able to beg, borrow and steal your way to a $30,00-35,000 profit.

Good Luck!
